Setting Up in the Great Outdoors

This is Central Baptist's third summer enjoying out-door worship during the summer months.  It's been a great success and when Spring rolls around our neighbors keep asking me, "When are you going to be worshiping outside again, we love it!"  It takes a lot of work to set up each week, but we have a dedicated group of people who undertake this ministry on behalf of others.
Most of us get to worship on Sunday Morning when the set up has completed, so we wanted to show people some of the work that goes into making outdoor worship happen.

We start with nothing more than the frames for the canopies.  It's amazing that these skelatons could be used to provide a portably sanctuary, but they work wonderfully!

Image

Putting the actual covers on the frames is the next step.  They have to be put on correctly or the straps which hold them on aren't able to be latched (as we've found out from time to time).

Image

With our covers put on, we have to add the legs to the Canopies.  One person for each leg, first one side, then the other.  And repeat...

The seating areas aren't the only things which need to be set up.  Here you see the speakers for our portable sound system, as well as the podium for readers.  On weeks where we celebrate communion, a portable communion table is also set up.

Here is the finished seating area.  We set the chairs back a bit so people end up sitting in the shade.

I call these bleachers, but they aren't really.  This area is wonderfully shaded by the time worship begins, and some people use the extra space to bring their own chairs.

Helpersons Help Themselves to First Place

Having battled for first place in the first weeks of the season, the Helpersons and Achie Breakies finally collided in week four. For three hard-fought matches the two teams at the top of the standings battled back and forth, but even with the benefit of being handed pins in the handicap the Achie Breakies couldn't hold on to the tenuous lead on first place as they lost all four games.  While some believe that the "Allen Lane Jinx" was behind Kori R's plummet in average (she bowled  an average of only 146, down from 183 in week 3) - Kori blames it on the the Achie Breakies alternate uniform, "I definately won't be wearing a dress next week, I didn't feel like I could move right."

In other action, the Huesken Hustlers handed the Blue Claws their second sweep in two weeks.  Tim H., the Hustlers' captain, bowled an astonishing average of 246 - improving their record to .500 and claiming a firm hold on a playoff spot.  If the  Huesken Hustlers are able to stay hot, they may be unbeatable once the playoffs begin.  "Everyone had better watch out," said Tim.  "We're just started to hit our stride."

The Blue Claw, however, managed to bounce back in a rare two match week, nearly sweeping The Untouchables.  In a first-ever for the new league, the two teams tied in one game, each getting one half of a win.  "I can't believe this, we just can't touch a win," said Untouchable captain Peg S.

Lane Change Stalls Blue Claws

After bouncing back from their 1 and 3 start against the Achy Breakies in week 1 by sweeping the Horning Hornets, the Blue Claws were poised to make a run up the standings in week 3.  The Blue Claw's were hoping to capitalize on the sudden emergence of Karen M as a top bowler in the league - after posting a week 2 average of 212 (71 points over her week 1 average of 141). Unfortunately for the Blue Claws, Karen was unable to keep up her average during her first match at Allen Lanes - posting a 175 average on the way to a 0 and 4 sweep at the hands of the Helpersons.  Karen commented, "I didn’t like the lane.  I want to play all my matches [at Horning Alley]."  Unfortunately for the Blue Claws, their next two matches are away from their home lane - going up against the Huesken Hustlers at the Huesken Pro-Am Alley and then against the Untouchables at Stavely Farms.

In other league action, both the Ballin' B's and the Horning Hornets bounced back from their week two struggles by posting 3 and 1 victories.  The victory put the hornets into third place overall, but the B's remained behind idle Mel2 due to a lower win-percentage.  The idle Achy Breakies are holding on to first place with a win percentage .875 - but will have fight for their position in week 4 against second place Helpersons.

League Notes

Rumors about the expansion of the bowling league for next season continue to go unsubstantiated.  Still, rumors of other Tri-Boro churches setting up experimental bowling clinics are still appearing in the conversations of some league players.  The league office was not available to comment on these rumors.
