CBWBA logoThe Central Baptist Wii™ Bowling Association is ready to get underway for it's second season, which will begin the week of July 5th (schedules will be released shortly). The league has expanded to fourteen teams this year, which will be broken up into two seven team divisions: Front Pew and Back Pew.  When asked about the dangers of expanding too rapidly, commissoner Chuck Horning responded, "The league office believes that expanding into two divisions will only benefit the competition this year.  It creates division rivalries and allows us to expand the playoffs from four to six teams."
This year will also see the two teams entering the league from Riverview Estates, a local Baptist retirement home with strong ties to Central Baptist.  Many are expecting these teams to compete for this year's title.
This year, in an effort to provide updates on the action, the league is encouraging fans and bowlers to follow and tweet using #CBWBA during matches.

Prayer for the Community Print E-mail
Friday, 19 December 2008 12:57
As we close out our week of spiritual disciplines we're going to look outward.  First to our church community, and then to our surrounding neighborhoods.  Church communities, after all, don't exist for themselves - they exist for the life of others.

Community Prayer

Heavenly Lord,
You exist eternally in community as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
As we draw near to each other in community, we reflect the love in which you exist.
Give us patience for each other,
that in you love we might be bound as one.

We also recognize that we are not called to community for ourselves,
the purpose of the Church is to live out your communion in the world.
Give us eyes to see our neighbors.
Grant us hearts which show empathy for other.
Bless us with ears to hear the needs of our towns and neighborhoods.
That we might, by the wisdom of your Holy Spirit, draw others to you.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we do pray.  Amen.

Gladdening Light Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 December 2008 03:40
The prayer known as the "Phos Hilarion" (gladdening light) dates back to the 3rd or 4th Century CE.  It was a hymn meant to be sung at the setting of the Sun, as the lamps of the evening were lit.  In a world without the bright electric lights we enjoy today darkness seemed to almost overwhelm human existence.  Yet, in that moment where the darkness of night might lead to despair this prayer was sung as a way of saying, "The light of our Triune God shines even in the darkness."
It's Triune nature is evident in the words, equally praying the Father, Son, and Spirit.  The verb "hymn" means "praise."  This use goes back to the book of Psalms where song marked "hymns" were songs of praise for the glory of the Lord.  In a sense, a "hymnal" is a "book of praise."
For the remainder of Advent, say this prayer with with your family in the evening, and allow the Light of God to brighten the darkness.  There is an excellent contemporary version that you can download through Amazon, a more traditional version is also available.

Phos Hilarion

O Joyful Light of the holy glory of the immortal, heavenly, holy blessed Father, O Jesus Christ.
Having come to the setting of the sun,
having beheld the evening light,
we hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God.
Meet it is at all times to hymn Thee with reverend voices, O Son of God, Giver of Life, wherefore the whole world doth glorify Thee.
